There’s no escaping it, humans have always had a problem coping with rats. It’s not just in Australia but everywhere that humans roam, rats will follow. The cause is always about food, how we store it and dispose of it when we’ve eaten enough. The truth is, having rats in our habitats is a problem we’ve created for ourselves but it’s difficult to avoid and once you’ve got a sign that you have rodent visitors, it’s not long before it will escalate and then you’ve got a rat infestation, with all the disease problems and health risks.
Farming in NSW has had particular problems linked with the recent drought and the knock-on effect has been to see their crops devoured by hordes of mice and rats. With Dubbo being an agricultural hub, infestations have been more prominent and far-reaching, hitting all manner of residential and business premises.
The Brown Rat is a regular visitor to our homes. Obviously brown in colour, this rat often goes under the name of the Norwegian or sewer rat. This pest wants to be as close to humans as it can get. It’s mainly roaming at night, building burrows and will create a next inside your home or outbuilding.
The Black Rat or Roof rat may be black but could also be white. Many of its population are a steel grey colour with a very long tail. You are likely to find these in the roof area and loft spaces.
We should also mention the House Mouse. These are, as you would expect, much smaller, brown and when there are a few around, you’ll notice a strong smell. These guys like it when the house is quiet, so you’ll see them at night searching for food.
There may be other species visiting and infesting homes but in Dubbo, the problem is likely to be caused by one of these three culprits.
When there are just a few around, we tend to ignore them. When there’s a rat infestation in Dubbo, we decide to take action. At this point though, the risk of a health problem has gone through the roof. It’s better to get your pests under control when the number is low. The list of symptoms linked to rodent diseases is extensive. From fevers and chills to diarrhea and vomiting, people do feel really unwell when infected by a rodent disease. The biggest form of transmission is through the inhalation of dust from rat faeces, which is easily done when the pest is in such abundance.
The problems for the farmers are slowly coming under control but rat infestation is likely to rear its head again as humans are going to constantly struggle to cope with rapid rat colonisation. We need to be prepared and ready to react.
