What to look for and important information on cockroaches in your home

Although Australia itself has more than 400 species of Cockroaches, only three species of them usually invade our homes. These “Pest Cockroaches” are usually active at night, attracted to food scraps or molecules and hide in dark, hidden areas. We usually find them in kitchens, under refrigerators and dishwashers where they wait during the day for the inevitable night-time smorgasbord.

Despite what people think, your home doesn’t have to be dirty for you to get cockroaches. They are attracted to food particles and household items, such as toothpaste, so multiple items can attract them. Even if your house is absolutely sparkling clean, they will still come in. They can live for a month or more without food so they can wait until you drop something. They love water, being able to stay under it for more than 45 minutes and can only live for around one week without it.

  • German Cockroach (Blattella Germanica)

Look for a small body, approximately 10mm, with pale brown colouring and two dark markings running lengthwise down the body. These are most common to find in households.

There are dangers associated with Cockroaches in your home. These pests can carry many types of bacteria including salmonella and E.Coli which they can easily spread throughout your household. Once they have moulted and the skin has been discarded, it can cause Asthma and Allergies.

In colder months cockroaches like to hide in dark places like drawers, under furniture, usually in the kitchen near food and water. As they are active in summer you will notice an increase in numbers as they breed. As they are not easily vanquished, lasting up to two days without a head, killing just one won’t do the trick. Making an action plan to kill the entire nest is a necessity if you want to rid your home of them.
